Sunflower Camp for Ukrainian Children-2023

Ellen Report -July 5

While most of the children live in the city, many of them have not had the opportunity to “sight see” and learn about their new city.

Today the children had an excursion to the Old Town of Warsaw, which is a UNESCO World Heritage site. The guide told them many stories and the legend of the Mermaid, the iconic symbol of Warsaw. According to the legend, a mermaid swam up the Vistula River and decided to settle in Warsaw, becoming its protector, hence the statue in Market Square depicting the Mermaid holding a symbolic sword and a shield.

The younger group was surprised and asked  “Are there honestly mermaids?” ? they are to such sweet children!

Today was a very hot summer day and the children cooled off with some ice cream.

The older group finished their film projects. The middle group had dance.

An interesting, fun and carefree day!

This is Andrey he lives alone and is a mentally disabled, but he is very open and kind. His windows were so old they couldn’t hold heat in and during the rain they were always leaking. There was mold on each window. He was very grateful for the window insulation which we did him.

We need funding to help keep this project going. As little as $15 can replace a window.

The need is big, but small donations will make a difference!

Summer Camp update: July 4, 2023

This morning’s activities started with sports, learning a dance and a special message in English to our American friends, wishing them a Happy Independence Day!

In the afternoon the children took an excursion to the Museum of Technology and climbed to the observation deck of the Palace of Culture and Science, in the heart of Warsaw. At 30 stories high, this was the tallest building in Poland until 2022!
Most of the children have never been that high up in their lives!

After a delicious lunch, the children saw the results of the workshop where they made beautifully colored tie dyed T-shirts!
They also continued to work in their movie making teams, and learning more about the art of filmmaking.

It was a busy and touching day with new achievements!
During their time together, the children have become real friends and are asking to come to the camp for the next sessions!

This is Elena. She lives with her son. After one of the shells hit, all the windows in their house were destroyed. They didn’t want to cover it with wood because it doesn’t hold heat and doesn’t let any light to come in. When we did the window insulation she couldn’t believe that it would look so good. She said a lot of words of gratitude.

We need funding to help keep this project going. As little as $15 can replace a window.

The need is big, but small donations will make a difference!
